Richard L. Atkinson, Jr., M.D. is President and Co-Founder of the American Obesity Association.  

Currently Dr. Atkinson is Emeritus Professor of Medicine and Nutritional Sciences at the University of Wisconsin, Madison and Clinical Professor of Pathology at Virginia Commonwealth University. He serves as the Editor of the International Journal of Obesity. He is President and Co-Founder of the American Obesity Association, Past President of the North American Association for the Study of Obesity (NAASO) and the American Society for Clinical Nutrition (ASCN), and Vice President of the Dannon Institute, a non-profit nutrition foundation. Dr. Atkinson served as Chair of the Nutrition Study Section for the National Institutes of Health and Chair of the Committee on Military Weight Management for the National Academy of Sciences.

Dr. Atkinson has been a consultant for the National Institutes of Health, National Academy of Sciences, Department of Veterans Affairs, US Food and Drug Administration, US Department of Agriculture, US Federal Trade Commission, and more than 30 companies and non-profit foundations.  Dr. Richard Atkinson has published more than 160 articles and 200 abstracts in scientific literature.  He is married to Susan Hume Atkinson and has three children and 12 grandchildren.
